Here are some things I encountered during my upgrade from Edgy Eft to Feisty Fawn. Thru Kubuntu the Linux desktop is really a good replacement for windoze! Sweet!
Adept manager immediately recognized there was an upgrade available. The upgrade with adept stopped after about 33% with some errors. When I switched to the shell and used the command "apt-get upgrade" the process continued. After finishing that left me with some 100 files that were not added and still listed in adept. So I fired up adept again. Upgrading finished smoothly then.
Nvidia driver
I got stuck with that for a while. I used envy before to install the proprietary Nvidia driver, but that failed even with the beta for feisty. After some googling I found out that the proprietary drivers are included in Feisty. Just adept nvidia-glx-new, change Driver from "nv" to "nvidia" and the oficial driver is used.
Nvidia-settings
Once the official driver is installed you can use nvidia settings [image]. All kinds of options can be manipulated here. Unfortunately it was not possible for me to write the settings to /etc/X11/xorg.conf for some reason. I used the preview mode and pasted the content into xorg.conf
Knetworkmanager
Feisty now features a fancy interface for connecting to wireless networks even WPA is supported. It remembers previous connections and automatically connects to availabe networks. Unfortunately the VPN plugin is configurable with pem files only. I couldn't get it going even with the nice tutorial here: www.myhren.org/technical-stuff/networkmanager-and-openvpn/
USB devices
Feisty features a nice dialogue window that show the device is mounting or unmounting. after the initial upgrade I had some issue with my usb mouse. I had to unplug/plug it sometimes to get it to be recognized. This seems solved by an automatic update of HAL
The Next Release
Can't wait for
Gutsy Gibbon. It is released in october this year which coincides with the release of KDE 4. What a great team that will be.
