Since TYPO3 version 4.3 we started a release cycle where TYPO3 will be released every half year. The release of TYPO3 4.3 was end of november this year and version 4.4 will be released end of May 2010.

Goals

This release has a number of high level goals:

  1. To increase adoption of TYPO3
  2. To stabilize the TYPO3 Core package by finishing open tasks
  3. To pave a way for a smooth transition to TYPO3 v5
  4. To ensure maximum backwards compatibility

TYPO3 logoThe plans for TYPO3 4.4 are quite ambitious. Some of the work has already been done at the User eXperience Week that was held this year. some of the developers will meet in Januari in Frankfurt to ensure the continuation of what was started then.

A-class extensions

An interesting new concept is the introduction of A-class extensions. With well over 4000 extensions in the extension repository one might easily lose track of what are the most important extensions. The concept of A-class extensions marks some extensions as very valuable and ofcourse there is also the aim to let A also meam 'accessible'.

Lots more

Benni Mack has made a complete list on one of the links you will find below. Exciting things to look forward in this new release is enhancements in workspaces, skinning, out-of-the-box introduction package, more extJS in the backend and some refactoring.
